DWC STARTUP GUIDE (for rookies) written by LADY Z
I'd like to thank LZ again for her time and effort however this thread is still
UNDER CONSTRUCTION as im researching and its my next project once i build my own, ill add step-by-step pics and possibly submit the post to the tutorial forum, but for now the info is shared
Enjoy

(shoots out to sparkie, greentoes,Kdmac,Sugarbud,LZ, and all the other hydropro's that inspired me its made me switch my growing style up from organics-Hydro

There are 2 ways to do this--- Bins-- or buckets!
Bins can hold 3 small, 2 good sized-- or one HUGE plant per 18-22 gallon bin.
OR use 5-gallon buckets with lids... 1 plant per.
Say you decide to use 3 bins or 3 buckets with a rez...
you will need :
3 Bins or Buckets ($5 to $10 each), a Rez of at least 25 gallons ($10), 7 hose connector fittings and one hose fitting that is an elbow (They come in sets at hydro shops for about $6).... a large roll of black or opaque hose/tubing that fits them($10-$12) a [b]small[b]"table-top" fountain pump for the rez with adapters to fit the hose you use ($10), 8 rubber grommets that fit the connectors ($3), a multi-outlet airpump that can handle the # of buckets you use and the rez-or individual pumps ($25-$200 depending on what you use), tubing and airstones for the pumps ($15), 3-9 net pots (depending on # of plants- $1 each), a hole-saw that is the same diameter as the BOTTOM of the net pots, 2 drill bits- 1 the same size as your hose and 1 the size of your air tubing, a tube of aquarium silicone sealer ($5), and a good Drill.
In each bucket or bin, drill a hole on each side as close to the bottom as possible using the drill bit the size of the hose connectors. Fit a rubber grommet into each hole and cement in place with aquarium sealant.
Use the hole saw to make openings in the lids for each net-pot. Drill a hole in the top with the large drill bit for using a ph/ppm tester (you may need a bigger bit, depending on your tester). Drill a hole with the smaller bit in the upper lip of the bin/bucket for the air tubing.
When the sealant is dry-- fit a hose connector into each grommet from OUTSIDE the bucket/bin/rez--with the elbow connector on one bin/bucket. (this goes at the END of the line of bins) cement them into place.
When the sealant has cured 24 hours-- you are ready to set up.
Place your rez/buckets/bins where you want them, then measure and cut the hose to connect the rez to your 1st bucket, then the rest of them together, making sure there are no crimps or bends in the hose.
Remember to put the bin/bucket with the elbow furthest from the rez with the elbow at the very end of the line!!!
You will now cut a hose to run from the elbow to rez.
Make SURE they are on the connectors good and tight... some people use hose clamps-- you don't HAVE to, but it cuts the risk of "accidental disconnections", and leaks.
Now- Make sure your water pump is on it's LOWEST setting, connect a piece of hose to it and place it in the rez--- connecting it to the fitting that is attached to the LONG hose going to the last bucket/bin.
Set up one of your Air Pumps and place the stones in the bottom of the rez. Set up the other pump (if used) and run air lines and stones into each bucket/bin.
Fill your rez... this takes time, because it will empty into the buckets/bins as it fills... you will have to pause and wait a few times then fill some more until they are all at the same water level. MEanwhile, you can turn on the airpumps so the stones can get saturated.
THIS IS THE TRICKY PART!!!
When the water level is just right... turn on the water pump in the rez and KEEP AN EYE ON THE BUCKET/BIN IT IS CONNECTED TO!
The water level should only rise slightly, then stabilize....
If it rises quickly-- OR keeps rising.. you will need to lower the pressure by cutting holes in the hose connected to the pump. These holes allow a small amount of water to pump out of the hose back into the rez-- lowering the water pressure.
Start by drilling or cutting 1 hole the size of the air tubing into the hose. Reconnect and try the pump again.
Once the water is pumping thru, and the levels are stable-- add your nutes to the rez AND the buckets-- WAIT 2-4 HOURS so the nutes mix and disperse evenly thru the system.. then adjust the ph the same way...each bucket and the rez.. wait a couple hours and check again....
When the ppm and ph is stable-- Add your plants and you are done!!!
Check your rez every day for level, ppm/ec and ph... check the buckets individually daily the 1st week to be sure the system is stable-- then once a week after that.
Hope this Helps ya!!!
Post this on the boards for others to see!
