This is being started at the request of a couple members. Many mistakes are common to new growers.. ESPECIALLY if you do not read the Tutorials, FAQ's, or the beginner board before you start sprouting.

SO here is a list of what NOT to do or Use as a New Grower...

Members-- Please Chime in with suggestions-- but ONLY serious/helpful hints--- sarcasm, jokes, flames, etc WILL be deleted!



#1-- NEVER EVER sprout a seed if you have not read the FAQ's and Tutorials about beginners growing!

#2-- NEVER try to grow in a small space (under the bed, a cardboard boy, a closet full of clothes etc...) with a reading light, incandescent bulb etc... it is insufficient light and space (refer to #1)

#3--Do not fertilize seeds or sprouts until they have 3 sets of true leaves, and that definately includes NOT planting seeds into soil that contains Osmokote , Miracle Grow, or any other pre-applied chemical fertilizer.

#4--DO NOT use any fertilizer, nutrient, spray, fungicide, bug-spray etc... without asking someone unless you have seen it suggested MULTIPLE times on the boards by different people!! Please Refer to the FAQ's page where there is info on things to use as well as a PARTIAL list of ferts most often used and how to use them... if it isn't on there, Ask someone on the beginner board 1st!

#5-- DON'T spend a lot of $$$ on a bunch of fancy suppliments /products before knowing which ones can be use with your current nutes or in combination with each other... some mixes will kill your plant! ASK!!!

#6-- Do Not use things that "guarantee" female plants-- many are dangerous/poisonous and are used mostly by long-timers who really know how/if they work...... That includes feminized seeds--- feminized only means no males, and if grown improperly can easily hermie and seed all your plants.

#7--Don't start your 1st grow with large numbers of expensive plants. Star a couple seeds and see them thru to harvest before trying to become a commercial grower with a room full of weed! You may be surprised how much a plant can yield if you grow it properly!

#8-- DON'T buy ANY high-tech/ High Priced piece of equipment (lights, tents, Hydro gear etc..) until you ASK if anyone has used it or is familiar with it! There HAVE been recalls on some ph-Truncheons, grow tents etc.. that I STILL see being sold on Ebay etc... so ALWAYS ask 1st! It can save you $$ and your plants!

please don't purchase a hydrohut . the hydrohut pvc lining gasses off and will make your plants turn yellow and white and eventualy kill your plants. take it from me , i had this problem. reliable tent rooms imo are , secret jardin darkroom , homebox . these are the only ones i know of. also sunhut gassed off on me also the one with pvc lining

Hydrohuts WERE recalled-- so IF you buy one, be sure it was manufactured AFTER June 2008!!

Also Recalled: Bluelabs Ph Truncheon. It's sensor degrades and won't calibrate correctly.


Anyone that knows of any recalls-- PLEASE list em! We all benefit from knowing what NOT to buy!

We seem to have this question pop up every once in a while, although I do find it funny that people think it will help, it might be good to mention before someone just starts doing it without asking.

hey lz , i wrote an email to hydrohut , hydrohut@gmail.com and they responded they are not repairing the huts anymore due to they could not repair them properly 100% of the time so they are not selling any huts at this time . they are designing a totally new hut which will be availabe in the near future.

Is that from experience, ice? LMAO, jk

I tried that 30 years ago or so and I couldn't figure out why they kept dying. They were outside in the garden. My mum finally told me a few years back that she kept pouring liquid soap on them. At least now I know.
